Memorizing functions does not make you a better programmer, though having a general idea of what's available does help to bring your ideas to reality faster. There's some point to be said for that, but the returns cap out really really fast on that. I would go as far a to say that teacher is ultimately failing them. Faster or easier isn't always better but we should be able to decide that for ourselves. Ride the rails or hop a flight and get there in a few hours. Or I can road trip it with friends in a few days. I can still choose horse and wagon to travel from coast to coast for weeks if I want. Then allow the individual the freedom to choose what works best for them. However, this means to me that we should expand how we teach/learn and apply knowledge and skills to include more methods and paths to the same end result. And advances in technology can create dependencies that may become cognitive deficiencies later. I use a socket wrench.įundamentals are important to learn. I don't loosen or tighten bolts by hand either. Tools in general are meant to make a task easier or at least more efficient. It's 2022 and we no longer use horse and covered wagon to travel across the country. One who uses damn IDEs is a bit inferior as they depend on "tools that make programming easier".

*JGrasp is a lightweight IDE which provides software visualizations, with no autocompletion and fancy stuff you use in other IDEs. I use Intellij Idea and it is the best thing I've ever used. As I said earlier, the professors are happy with it though it would take them a whole day to write something you can achieve within an hour or two by using good IDEs. This seems alright until these people think that every one who uses damn IDEs is a bit inferior as they depend on "tools that make programming easier". I think it's counter-productive, but at least its "honest work" right? I've seen them do their work and debug shit for hours where it can be done with minutes using goddamn IDEs such as Eclipse or IDEA.

So, this guy and his classmates code in JGrasp for hours, writing the functions by hand and doing a LOT of google search about what functions to put. I mean, I get it that one should be familiar with the syntax but using JGrasp for all the time would just lower one's productivity (comparing how you can program in other IDEs with ease and comfort). Well, their professor forces them to code in JGrasp and encourages them to memorize the functions and some other things to "become a better programmer". We are currently freshman students right now in different universities.
